چکیده

The long-term goal of the research effort to be described in this paper is to investigate the possibility of obtaining quantitative information about the near-surface wind field and perhaps other parameters that characterize the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) from an analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Because of its potential for obtaining such information, this application of SAR, especially for use in coastal waters, would represent a significant advance over most scatterometer and passive microwave sensors that yield only coarse-resolution estimates of the wind field. Moreover, the extended swath width of the ScanSar beam modes, already available on RADARSAT and planned for ENVISAT, can significantly extend the coverage necessary for practical applications.

Mesoscale Near-Surface Wind Speed Variability Mapping with Synthetic Aperture Radar

Operationally-significant wind speed variability is often observed within synthetic aperture radar-derived wind speed (SDWS) images of the sea surface. This paper is meant as a first step towards automated distinguishing of meteorological phenomena responsible for such variability. In doing so, the research presented in this paper tests feature extraction and pixel aggregation techniques focuse...

Computation of Wind Vectors over the Ocean Using Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar

he high resolution and large coverage of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offer a unique opportunity to derive mesoscale wind fields over the ocean surface and to investigate their spatial variation. For this purpose, different algorithms were developed and tested using SAR images from two European Remote Sensing satellites. In this article, the methods for deriving wind fields from SAR...

Extracting Fine-Scale Wind Fields from Synthetic Aperture Radar Images of the Ocean Surface

ork is described whose long-term goal is the extraction and analysis of fine-scale wind fields from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the ocean surface. Results are based on a field experiment in which a SAR image was taken nearly simultaneously with in situ aircraft-based turbulence and radar altimeter measurements. These results show a direct correlation between SAR “streaks” and atmos...

Coastal Observing Systems: the Role of Sar

he availability of cloudand light-independent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data has for nearly a decade provided regular and global observation of ocean wave spectra. Furthermore, the radar’s capability to detect and locate oil spills, bathymetric features in shallow water, and ships has also led to systematic use of SAR images in operational surveillance associated with marine coastal pollut...

Wind Energy Mapping Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

Wind energy off-shore is gaining much interest due to the high wind power potentials. The need is to map wind climatology and regional wind patterns in coastal regions. In the WEMSAR (Wind Energy Mapping using Synthetic Aperture Radar) project three European sites will be covered near Norway, Denmark and Italy. Data to be used are from the ERS-2 C-band scatterometer with a 50 km resolution, fro...
